  1. Greek mathematician and philosopher, who
  2. formulated Pythagoras' theorem. Much of his
  3. work concerned numbers, to which he assigned
  4. mystical properties. For example, he
  5. classified numbers into triangular ones (1,
  6. 3, 6, 10,...), which can be represented as a
  7. triangular array, and square ones (1, 4, 9,
  8. 16,...), which form squares. He also observed
  9. that any two adjacent triangular numbers add
  10. to a square number (for example, 1 + 3 = 4; 3
  11. + 6 = 9; 6 + 10 = 16;...). Pythagoras was the
  12. founder of a politically influential
  13. religious brotherhood in Croton, S Italy
  14. (suppressed in the 5th century). Its tenets
  15. included immortality of the soul and
  16. transmigration.
